How to Better Work from Home: COVID 19

During this pandemic, it’s really easy to get swept up in the mass of it all, and even worse, you are now required to work from home. For those of us who have never done it before it can be a little overwhelming and let’s be honest, distracting (cough cough Netflix). Here are a few tips and tricks I’ve learned over the past 6 years of working from home.

  1. Set a routine.

But no, it doesn’t have to be like your normal working routine, nothing is normal right now. So set a routine that works for you and your boss. Try something like this.

Wake up

Make coffee

Meditate

Maybe workout? Do some Yoga

Then shower and get ready (yes even if your pet is the only living thing that will see you. It helps)

Then get to work.

Making sure to take breaks during the day. Enjoy some sunshine, take a walk, read a good book.

Take time for yourself and your self care and follow these steps every day to support yourself.

2) Yes, the News is overwhelming.

Balance your time. Set a time everyday where you can catch up on what is happening in the world, direct people, and let them know you are okay. Set this time and stick to it. Anxiety can have a very real and traumatizing pressure on your workspace from home.

3) Designate “Worktime”

It’s super tricky to make sure that you are working enough, but also balancing your needs during this time. Something that I have found helps (because I live with someone) is having a set time that I’m working. I polity say “Work time” and then he knows not to bother me during this time. This allows my creativity to sore, and for the work to happen. Then when I’m done I close the lap top and give attention where attention is needed.

I try to eat at the same time throughout the day, taking my supplements, and finding time for yoga. Each and every day. Block out your time, and stick to it.

4) Don’t be complacent with your time.

Yes, you have so much extra time on your hands right now, and it’s really tricky to balance that. For me, I either work all day and all night, or I’m relaxing all day and all night. Finding that balance has been hard. But what I’ve found is that the more I’m strict with myself the better my mind is.

Set limits on social media. (With iPhone this is easy because you can let an alarm go off when you’ve used all your screen time)

Make sure you aren’t binge watching everything all the time. Set timers to get up and move. Movement is good for you.

Keep working out. THERE is so much out there right now, from Lives, to Zooms, you still don’t have to work out alone.

Surround yourself with quality information. Read good books, bring peace into your life, maybe try taking up a hobby you’ve always wanted to try.

Use your time wisely.

5) SELF CARE IS IMPORTANT.

Yes, we will always always say this. Right now is a time to be a bit more careful with yourself. Your workplace and your home just merge and that's a tricky situation to navigate.

  • Change into normal clothes when you get up.
  • Maybe get ready (whatever that looks like for you)
  • Eat well. Keep healthy snacks nearby because let’s be honest we are all snacking through this.
  • Be active, go outside (even if it’s just to sit outside)
  • Drink water you still need just as much water.
  • Be soft with yourself, there is so much going on in the world, you don’t need to add more pressure to yourself than is already there.
  • Do things you love, contact people who make you feel connected and uplifted.
  • Keep having good sleeps.
