Why Is SUP Yoga So Popular?

You heard from your friend about SUP Yoga, but you're feeling embarrassed that you don't know enough information about it? We've got you covered!

Here's the run down about Paddle Board Yoga. Why it's popular, how it benefits your health and why you should become obsessed with it like the rest of us.

Try SUP Yoga for Aquatic Based Stability Training

Although it’s been around for more than a decade or so, we are constantly being asked about the popularity of SUP yoga.

At Glide, we got on the Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga train early and were so impressed with the workout that we came up with our GlideFit workout platform which is basically SUP Yoga for swimming pools.

Something you won’t see discussed much is Aquatic Based Stability Training (ABST) and how it turbocharges your SUP Yoga practice:

A low impact, high intensity workout

ABST workouts are excellent for those looking for a workout that is gentle on the body but still high intensity.

In just a few weeks you will notice your strength, endurance, and overall fitness increase.

Coordination

ABST workouts promote improved coordination and reflex responses. This assists your body in reacting to sudden changes in direction, improves agility, and reduces the risk of falls.

Coordination should be an automatic reflexive response, but it tends to diminish as we age. ABST training allows you to improve your coordination and lower your reaction time.

Strength

Balance/Stability training challenges your central nervous system. By utilizing ABST you will ignite your central nervous system (CNS) which is critical to maximizing your performance in the weight room.

ABST forces your CNS to recruit and engage more muscle fibers when compared with doing the same exercise on land.

Recruiting more muscle will train your body to move with maximal velocity and force. This effect is known as post-activation potentiation (PAP), which is the increase in muscle force and rate of force development as a result of the previous activation of the muscle.

Body Awareness

Body awareness refers to the sense of how your own limbs are oriented and moving in space (also referred to as proprioception).

Balance training promotes increased body awareness, which makes movement more seamless and reduces the likelihood of injury.

Joint Stability

ABST training promotes stable ankles, knees, hips, spine, shoulders, and arms. Strengthening these joints will help to prevent numerous possible injuries such as rolled ankles or knee tears.

You will also benefit from an increased range of motion in your joints.

Reaction Time

When you slip or stumble while performing challenging balance exercises, your body needs to stabilize itself immediately or you will fall.

ABST will improve your reaction time as you learn to quickly correct a mistake, but not over-correct.

Weight loss

ABST dramatically increases weight loss over standard exercises. ABST not only strengthens your core and large muscle groups, it also engages the muscles used to stabilize your body.

Because ABST recruits more muscle, those muscles will grow and require more of your caloric intake than fat does which will increase your metabolism in turn.

Conclusion

If SUP Yoga is on your bucket list of things to try, give us a shout as we undoubtedly have a Glide SUP Yoga Ambassador teaching classes near you!
